Stewardship Rangers
Each year, young Ontarians find
employment as Stewardship Rangers.
They receive training in the management of
natural resources through the Ontario
Ministry of Natural Resources. The
Prescott-Russell Stewardship Council
welcomed five youths from this initiative to
work in the Alfred and Lefaivre regions
throughout the summers of 2003 and 2004.
Most of the work consisted of cleaning the
ecological trails in the woods surrounding
the Alfred College. The youths also worked
on improving the interpretational trails at
Atocas Bay in Lefaivre. This work was done
in partnership with Ducks Unlimited Canada
and Rodney Maclaren, a cattle farmer.
Some of the tasks included installing fencing
to restrict the cattle’s access to the swamps
and creeks of Atocas, laying down wood
chips to facilitate visitors access to the site, and clearing the ski trails at Larose Forest.. |
