The Ottawa
Stewardship Council (OSC) is one
of 46 Councils established and funded through the Ontario Stewardship Program.
It's a unique program in which a volunteer, community-based Stewardship
Council works on environmental enhancement projects, assisted by a
full-time Stewardship Coordinator, an employee of the Ontario Ministry
of Natural Resources (OMNR).
The Council is a credible forum
and resource for the many community-based stewardship /environmental
groups in our unique community, the City of Ottawa —
the Capital of Canada.

Council, including:
What's Happening?

The Dolman Ridge Nut Grove is a
unique area nestled in the forested National Capital Commission
Greenbelt surrounding the city of Ottawa,
Ontario.
This area is found in the vicinity of Anderson Rd.
In 2006, the Eastern Chapter of the Society
of Ontario Nut Growers (ECSONG) in partnership with the Ottawa
Stewardship Council (OSC), acting as the Dolman (Borthwick) Nut Grove
Coordinator, established a measurement trial within these plantations
in order to assess the growth of the forest stands and ultimately to
develop a management prescription to maintain/improve the health of the
forest and boost its seed crop and timber volume as part of an
agro-forestry demonstration site.
Eastern
Prairie Fringed Orchid Habitat Modeling Field Verification Survey
Report 2009
The Eastern Prairie Fringed-Orchid (EPFO) (Platanthera
leucophaea (Nuttall) Lindl.) was identified as a species at risk in
2007 under the Ontario Endangered Species Act. The largest global
populations of the orchid are found in Ontario, with one of the four of
the province's largest populations being located in the southern part
of the City of Ottawa. The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources
is currently taking measures to protect the Orchid population and, as
such, has joined forces with local environmental groups such as the
Ottawa Stewardship Council (OSC), close to major Orchid populations.
The goal of the EPFO Habitat Modeling Field Verification
Project undertaken by OSC, was to confirm the presence of the plants at
the sites identified through habitat modeling efforts; and to
develop stewardship plans (actions/recommendations) to potentially be
implemented at the positive and/or potential habitat sites.

Local Eastern Ontario Butternut Recovery Program
A
project aimed to inform and educate landowners about Butternut Canker
Disease and conservation of this species. Locate, assess and map
mature healthy Butternut trees and potentially resistant individuals
and store information in a geodatabase. Forecast seed crop,
collect seeds and grow healthy seedlings for planting on many public
and private sites throughout eastern Ontario. Collect material
from potentially resistant trees and test for hybridization.
As well as monitor seedling survival and health.
As Ottawa’s
landowner representative, the Ottawa Stewardship Council is assisting
Rideau Valley Conservation Authority in looking for properties with
mature butternuts to assess and/or for properties for planting young
butternut seedlings germinated from selected stock.
Should you be
interested in participating in this program as a landowner, please
