Osprey Nesting Platform
On October 18, 2006 we installed an osprey nesting platform just east of the international bridge in Johnstown. The landowner had seen osprey nesting on a nearby island and became quite interested in installing a nesting platform on his property. The landowner contacted the stewardship council for our help and we were happy to take this task on. The location was perfect for the nesting platform and we are sure that it won’t take long for the nest to be occupied by the osprey. We are hoping to see a nesting pair at the location next year. To install the nesting platform we had help from members of the stewardship council, the participating landowner, nearby neighbours and friends. We also partnered with a Grade 11 class from South Grenville District High School. Students from the school came out for a couple hours and did all the preparation work before the nest could go out. The day was a huge success, we had great weather and the nest was successful installed. Check out all the pictures from the day!
To date the stewardship has erected four Osprey Nesting Platforms. "All four sites are high profile sites," comments Jack Henry, Stewardship Coordinator from the Grenville Land Stewardship Council. "The community takes note of these sites and this provides linkages between the stewardship council and their community projects."
